U Nyan Win Thu, HSE Manager
U Nyan Win Thu’s career is dedicated to Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) activities. After making his first steps on our sites in Myanmar, he has been to France and then to Qatar to develop and promote Total HSE Culture.
From trainee to superintendent, learning on the field
After completing his studies from Yangon Institute of Technology, U Nyan Win Thu joined Total in 1999 as an Operation Trainee on our sites. Being a fast learner, he committed himself to Safety and took part to the supervision of safety activities. In 2006 he became our youngest HSE Superintendent. His first managerial position was a bit challenging. “In Myanmar traditionally authority comes according to seniority” he explains. “At the beginning, I paid a lot of attention to dealing with seniority. By always showing my respect, I eventually gained theirs. Since then we remained in very good terms” he smiles and says.
Assimilating and promoting Total HSE Culture
In 2010 U Nyan Win Thu was assigned to Pau, France and spent three years as HSE Engineer. “It gave me a better overview of the Group HSE tools and processes” he explains. “Beyond the rules and procedures, there is a real commitment to protect the people, environment and asset everywhere we work”.
U Nyan Win Thu then pursued his international experiences in Total E&P Qatar where he acted as head of HSE. “With Total we are the client usually, but there it was quite a different experience to be on the other side” he recalls. He believes that his major asset for the job was the strong HSE culture he developed with Total. Because the challenge is not to define the proper policies and procedures, it is to change the mentalities. “Everyone on the field shall understand that they actually have the rights to stop any action or situation which put personnel or the environment in danger” he states.
Committed to a Safe and Green workplace
He came back to Myanmar in 2016 to become the HSE and Security Manager. Devoted to Safety, he is now responsible for all HSE activities of the affiliate. “I want to keep my team motivated, to lead them out of their comfort zone so they develop new skills and have more confidence.” he explains. He knows that an innovative and accomplished organization is the key to spread the right HSE culture. Not only to ensure that everyone goes back home safely but also to bring and share the good practices at home. “Safety is a core value, it's at the heart of our HSE culture, but there are also other aspects” he says. To illustrate that, an Energy saving initiative was launched to decrease the environmental carbon footprint of our facilities. He preaches that “We can make improvement in simple ways, by changing how we think and adopting the right practices.”
Safety is a core value, it's at the heart of our HSE culture, but there are also other aspects.
